Rafael learned early to play the guitar by his father, a member of the trio Huancavilca, a well known Trio in Ecuador and all over South America.
At the age of 15, he began, in Guayaquil to study trombone at the Conservatory Antonio Neumane, which he quit when he was 18 years old in favor of studies of the double bass, harmony, and singing.
From that time on he played with various Salsa Orchestras in Ecuador. 1992 he moved to Germany, where he started working with a variety of orchestras like Rico Son, Sol y Sombra, Orquesta La Claridad, La nueva Creación from Puerto Rico, Orquesta Renacer (Puerto Rico), Gollito y su Combo, Los Hechiceros de la Salsa (as a band leader), Sangre Nueva, Orquesta Salsaborrr, Macumbaché, Conjunto Cuarteto Caliente, Merengue Grupo Mi Gente (Switzerland), Grupo Si Señor, Frutos Tropicales, Tremendo Cumbán, La Pandilla, Orquesta Pablo Chino Nunez & Friends and where his ability on his instrument made him a bass player in demand in the Latin style.
Since 2001 he is a permanent member with Orquesta Salsamanía.
